The McAuliffe Site Services team have been busy on site of the former shopping centre – Whiteleys, but sadly we have not been doing any shopping ourselves! 🛍️
🤩 We are excited to be providing this monumental development with the key electrical services, to enable all trades to undertake their relevant works across the various phases on site. .
🕰️ History of Whiteleys Shopping Centre
Whiteleys, once one of the great department stores of London, was originally founded by Yorkshireman William Whiteley in 1863 and its slogan was “everything from a pin to an elephant.”
Whiteley was murdered in 1907 but his sons decided to open a new shop on Queensway in 1911 before the business was bought by arch-rival Gordon Selfridge. It was turned into a shopping mall in 1989.
The 109-year-old Grade II listed mall had been closed for two years after a period of slow decline following the opening of the nearby Westfield London mall in 2008.
🚀 The Future – “The Whiteley”
The redevelopment of the historic Whiteleys Shopping Centre will create a vibrant destination for the community. The redevelopment includes:
🏢 139 world-class modern residences
🛒 ☕ 20 new shops, cafes and restaurants,
🌲 a central public courtyard,
📽️ cinema,
💪 gym &
🛌 London’s flagship Six Senses hotel and spa.
🕰️ The famous clock and glass dome will be restored and a new public courtyard created in the centre of the building. The grand staircase will be incorporated into the hotel.
